The Mel Blanc Show :: Episode 06 :: Sally and Marylou

Mel Blanc lands himself in hot water when a secret fishing trip turns into one giant romantic misunderstanding. In “Sally and Marylou,” two perfectly innocent names cause Betty and her suspicious father to think Mel is sneaking around with other women — when, naturally, the truth is much sillier.

Originally broadcast October 8, 1946, this episode is commonly listed as Episode 6 of The Mel Blanc Show, with an approximate runtime of 24 minutes. The OTRR Archive.org single-episode collection also includes it under the title “Sally and Marylou.” Cute little comedy grenade, this one.

🎙️😂 Step inside The Mel Blanc Show — a fast, funny, and wonderfully offbeat classic radio comedy starring the one and only Mel Blanc in one of his rare leading roles. Long before generations knew him as the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester, Tweety, and more, Mel Blanc was tearing it up on network radio as the well-meaning but accident-prone owner of Mel’s Fix-It Shop.

Set in a repair shop that seems to attract every kind of broken machine, strange customer, neighborhood problem, and comic disaster imaginable, The Mel Blanc Show blends traditional 1940s sitcom charm with Mel’s elastic voice work, sound-driven humor, and gloriously goofy energy. The result is a show that feels like classic old time radio with a little cartoon madness bubbling underneath the floorboards.

The series aired on CBS from 1946 to 1947 and built a strong supporting cast around Blanc, including Mary Jane Croft as Betty Colby, Joseph Kearns as Mr. Colby, Hans Conried as Mr. Cushing, Alan Reed as Mr. Potchnik, and Bea Benaderet as Mrs. Longneck. Fans of Mel’s later animation work will also get a kick out of the show’s side-character energy, especially the flavor around Zookie, which Radio Spirits notes carried a vocal quality reminiscent of Porky Pig territory.

If you love classic radio comedy, golden age broadcasting, vintage sitcoms, and the history of great voice performance, The Mel Blanc Show is an underrated gem. It is warm, weird, lively, and loaded with personality — the kind of show that reminds you just how much comic firepower Mel Blanc had before most people ever saw a rabbit ask what’s up. 🔥📻
