The Shadow – Episode 004: The Three Ghosts

The Shadow continues with “The Three Ghosts,” a haunting 1937 mystery thriller starring Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston and Agnes Moorehead as Margo Lane.

A newly married woman is being driven toward madness inside her husband’s gloomy old manor. Strange apparitions, ghostly terror, and whispered fears surround her, but the truth hiding beneath the haunting may be far more sinister than anything from beyond the grave.

That is when Lamont Cranston enters the darkness.

Using his mysterious power to cloud men’s minds, The Shadow investigates a twisted plot of greed, deception, and psychological terror. What appears to be a supernatural haunting may instead be the work of criminals using fear as a weapon — and The Shadow is the one man who can step unseen between evil and its victim.

Originally broadcast on October 31, 1937, “The Three Ghosts” landed on Halloween night, making it a perfect example of how The Shadow blended crime drama, supernatural atmosphere, pulp mystery, and radio suspense into one unforgettable half-hour of Golden Age storytelling. Archive listings commonly place this episode after “The Temple Bells of Neban” in the early surviving 1937 run, with Orson Welles and Agnes Moorehead featured in the lead roles.
