Crime Classics // Ep. 2: The Shockingly Peaceful Passing of Thomas Edwin Bartlett // OTR Crime

🩸🎙️ Step into the elegant, eerie world of Crime Classics — a legendary old time radio series where history’s strangest murders, notorious killers, and unforgettable criminal cases are brought to life with wit, style, and razor-sharp storytelling. This is not loud, crash-bang crime radio. It is clever, literate, moody, and wonderfully sinister, with each episode digging into a real historical crime and presenting it like a beautifully wrapped poison gift.

Originally broadcast on CBS from 1953 to 1954, Crime Classics was one of the crown jewels of producer-director Elliott Lewis, with Morton Fine and David Friedkin writing every script and Lou Merrill guiding listeners through the mayhem as the wonderfully dry and unsettling Thomas Hyland. The series pulled its stories from crimes found in old records and newspapers from many eras and places, giving the program a unique blend of true crime, historical drama, and high-end radio craftsmanship.

What makes Crime Classics stand out is its tone. It can be grim, but it is never dull. It can be funny, but never goofy. The writing has a sly intelligence to it, the production is polished as hell, and the episode titles alone are half the fun. If you love classic radio, true crime, historical mysteries, and the darker side of human nature served with style, Crime Classics is essential listening. It is one of old time radio’s most distinctive shows — classy, creepy, and absolutely unforgettable. 🔥📚
